Katrina kaif as a museum Barbie!

Posted in Events, katrina kaif, News on June 1, 2009 by nrmodh

If London has its waxwork of Aishwarya Bachchan at Madame Tussauds, then New York is getting Katrina Kaif’s as Barbie Doll in Bloomingdale’s.

Yes, the stunning actress who hopes to make it to the No 1 slot in Bollywood this year, is happily trilling Aqua’s song I’m A Barbie Girl, In My Barbie World… these days. You remember she walked the ramp at the Mumbai Fashion Week in March as the Indian face of the celebrity doll, don’t you? Well, the gorgeous face and sexy body of Katz is being moulded into the world’s most popular doll for the Barbie Museum in NY.

“The customised Barbie being made for the American museum will be just like me,” confirmed the actress who will join those of the likes of international pop singers Beyonce Knowles and Diana Ross in the showcase. (Incidentally, Ash’s waxwork stands alongside others from Bollywood and India, including Pa Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Sachin Tendulkar.) “I’m thrilled! As a kid I used to play with Barbie dolls — which girl hasn’t? Almost every household has one. It’s every little girl’s dream companion,” said Katz.

It’s not true that Ash was first considered for this honour and then replaced by Katz. “It’s just a coincidence that I’m getting whatever she had earlier,” said the actress who is endorsing some brands made popular by Ash earlier. “She’s moved onto doing things which for her are even bigger, but that doesn’t mean I’ve replaced her.” The Barbie Doll concept came about after several designers were asked to compete by creating outfits for the doll, with the winning design being modelled at the fashion week by Katrina.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to perform at IIFA Awards in Macau

Posted in Aishwarya Rai, Events, News on May 30, 2009 by nrmodh

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will perform at the Idea IIFA Awards 2009 to be held at the Venetian Macau.

The others performing at the event also include Sonam Kapoor who will be making her stage debut, while Kareena Kapoor will also put on a special performance.

The Idea IIFA Awards will be hosted by Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta and Boman Irani.

Aishwarya had earlier performed at IIFA 2005 in Amsterdam when she performed to Kajra Re and was joined by Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan.

Speaking on the choice for Macau as the host for IIFA Weekend 2009, Wizcrafts’ Sabbas Joseph said, “We feel it’s the Las Vegas of the East. In this the tenth year of IIFA’s existence we wanted either the US or China to be our venue. We chose China because we feel it could be a gateway for Indian cinema to the West. We also hope to end the deadlock between India and China over the exchange of cinema. We haven’t come away from one venue without opening up doors for the India film industry. We’re confident this would be the case in China.

Indian films get positive response in Cannes

Posted in Events, News on May 21, 2009 by nrmodh

With “Slumdog Millionaire” having made waves on the global scene, Indian movie themes and filmmakers are beginning to reap the benefits in the international sales and co-productions arena at the ongoing Cannes Film Market.

“‘Slumdog’ has opened a door for Indian cinema,” says Hollywood producer Ashok Amritraj. “We have to put our foot in and capitalise on the opportunity.”

The happy augury is that several Indian films have been picked up for global distribution by frontline sales agents and the going could only get better from here on if filmmakers from this part of the world, as Amritraj points out, can learn the rules of the game.

The Indian Film Company (TIFC) has made history by selling its “Road, Movie”, written and directed by Dev Benegal, to Fortissimo Films, which is one of the world’s leading sales agents with offices in Amsterdam, London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong.

“‘Road, Movie’ is an important milestone in our company’s endeavour to support India’s growth on the cinematic world stage,” said Sandeep Bhargava, CEO of the advisory board of TIFC.

TIFC has also got leading British distribution company HanWay Films on board to handle Gurinder Chadha’s “It’s a Wonderful Afterlife”, starring Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Jimi Mistry and Shabana Azmi.

Endeavour Independent has bought the distribution rights of Venus Records and Tapes’ “Hisss”, a Hindi-English film directed by Jennifer Lynch and starring Irrfan Khan and Mallika Sherawat.

Also playing for big global stakes is Ambika Hinduja’s Serendipity Films. It is pitching the Leena Yadav-directed “Teen Patti” for widespread global sales in the Cannes Film Market. The film features Amitabh Bachchan, Ben Kingsley, R. Madhavan and Saira Mohan.

“We want to make cinema that will appeal to audiences in both India and around the world,” Hinduja, whose previous production was Homi Adjania’s wickedly quirky “Being Cyrus”, told Variety in Cannes.

India’s biggest entertainment sector player, Reliance Big Pictures, has brought a slew of arthouse films, besides Anurag Basu’s Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori starrer “Kites”, to the Cannes market. The response, company representatives say, has been hugely encouraging.

Big Pictures’ offbeat regional line-up includes Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s “Janala” (Bengali), Shaji N. Karun’s “Kutty Srank” (Malayalam), Amol Palekar’s “Samantar” (Marathi), M.S. Sathyu’s “Ijjudu” (Kannada), and Rituparno Ghosh’s “Abohomaan” and “Shob Charitra Kalponik” (both Bengali).

“We will be unveiling these films in various major festivals in the coming months,” says Reliance Entertainment chairman Amit Khanna.
