John Abraham hospitalised

John Abraham

John Abraham seems to be running through a rough patch. The most recent mishap, and perhaps the most major of them all happened on Saturday when he fractured his foot. It happened while shooting a day-long cricket match for David Dhawan’s Hook Ya Crook.

Says a close friend of John, “The hard ball shot straight through the air and bang into John’s right foot and he heard a distinct crack. John knew something had gone awfully wrong in his foot. But he continued shooting throughout the day because he didn’t want to disrupt David’s schedule which required special permission for outdoor shooting.”

It was only after the day’s shooting that John, by then cringing in pain, sat down to examine the damage.

“The foot had swollen to twice its normal size. It wasn’t just a pulled muscle or a torn ligament as John had hoped. It was a full-blown fracture. And by playing cricket with injured foot, John made it worse,” says the friend.

After pack-up John walked to his car, drove off to the doctor who finally told John what he suspected the whole day. Verdict passed, John was rushed to the hospital in acute pain. Now he will need a month to recover. Fortunately for the actor there’s no shooting to be done. The next one month is devoted to acting workshops for Abbas Tyrewala which John can somehow limp through.

But all his friends and family agree the last week has been tough on John.

“He was down with a severe viral fever, followed by the whole unsavoury link-up with Katrina Kaif. Then John lost a favourite Uncle. And now his foot is fractured. Hopefully this is the climax of his crises,” says the friend.

Says John, “I really wouldn’t like to talk about it. But yes, I’m in a lot of pain. Fortunately no film is going to get affected.”

Bipasha Basu got to know about John’s injury on Sunday morning. John had sent her an sms about his condition on Saturday night. But she had already gone to sleep. Now she’s expected to rush back as soon as possible.

“It’s sad. But John was foolish to keep on playing when his foot was hurt instead of getting it checked.”

John wants only Katrina kaif

Posted in John Abraham, News, katrina kaif on June 1, 2009 by nrmodh

Looks like John Abraham is taking his fondness for Katrina Kaif to a new level. The actor has been suggesting Kat’s name to every producer who comes his way.

Recently, when Johnny boy was offered Rob Cohen’s The Jewel of India, he told the makers to chose Katrina over Deepika.

Even though Cohen himself has personally admitted he’s mesmerised by Deepika, John insisted that Katrina had wider appeal.

A source reveals, “John sounded like Kat’s agent. He kept telling the producers how the international film needed a leading lady like Katrina as she has a more foreign appeal.

John also claimed he would reduce his fee if they got Kat on board.”

Now only if he would concentrate more on acting rather than marketing, he wouldn’t have to take that pay cut!

John Abraham’s Giant Search

Posted in John Abraham, News on April 17, 2009 by nrmodh

John is proving to be a man of his words. After having announced his concern for the declining numbers of pachyderms, the actor is looking for forest lands to set up a home for elephants. He is looking for land in the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.

The actor has been doing his rounds of the Mantralaya along with film-maker and conservationist Mike Pandey.

The duo reportedly met up with Babanrao Pachpute, the minister for forest, to allocate land for the same.

John and Mike have all their permissions in place and are hopping around looking for options.

Mike added that the duo was taking no chance and were probing laws and regulations required to be fulfilled before acquiring the land. They are also looking for tie ups with corporate houses to ensure their plan is a success.

We wish the duo a mighty success!

From luck by chance to instant stardom!

Posted in Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham on April 15, 2009 by nrmodh

Luck is a major factor in determining a nobody’s rise to instant stardom in Bollywood. There are many instances in the Hindi film industry where one’s casual refusal to do a certain role has made another a star. As rightly showed in Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut Luck By Chance, Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) becomes a star after his film, which was dumped by star actor Zafar Khan (Hrithik Roshan), becomes a huge hit. While many refuse scripts on the pretext of substantial roles, others just don’t like the script. But it has always helped a mere first-timer to prove his talent and excel in it too.

The most significant replacement bid of all time was Zanjeer. Prakash Mehra’s fiery script couldn’t impress the likes of Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Raj Kumar to don the grease paint for the film. The role of a righteous, incensed cop with a tumultuous past didn’t seem interesting to these stalwarts who wanted many changes to be made in the script suiting their image. While Dharmendra chickened out on the pretext of date issues, Dev Anand wanted to turn it into a musical and Raj Kumar wanted it to be shot in Chennai.

Finally on Pran’s insistence, who played the role of Sher Khan in the film, Prakash Mehra reluctantly signed a virtually unknown lanky actor riding on seven flops, Amitabh Bachchan. And rest as they say was history with the film becoming a big success and the emergence of a superstar for whom no role is difficult to portray. Amitabh Bachchan also became synonymous to the famous epithet of ‘The Angry Young Man’ of Bollywood. The man is yet to age at 66 and gets role tailor-made for him even today!

Same thing happened during the filming of Don. Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Dharmendra refused to do the film because they were too conscious of their image. Don was a story of a smuggler and a Police Inspector’s drive to bring him to book by getting a duplicate placed in his place when the real Don dies. Since the lead character had grey shades, the stalwarts backed out as they thought it might tarnish their goody-two-shoes image in the audience’s mind. And so Amitabh Bachchan volunteered to step in and Don became Big B’s one of the most enticing film ever.

It might sound as if it was just Amitabh Bachchan who had all the luck of being at the right place at the right time. But it’s not true. Even our Baadshah was lucky by chance when he bagged Darr. Shah Rukh Khan became a sensation, though as an anti-hero, with Darr. In fact, he was the first actor who initiated his Bollywood career with negative roles, First Baazigar and then Darr. Coming to the latter, Darr was a Yash Chopra film. So quite obviously, whoever is associated with it, will benefit from it all through his/her life. But Aamir Khan thought otherwise. He too was conscious of his image with the public. Post Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Dil, he became the chocolate hero of all teenage girls and he just didn’t want to do away with that image. So he refused to play the role of a stammering, obsessive and aggressive lover, Rahul Mehra. There’s where Yash Chopra thought of signing a nobody and zeroed in on a thin guy with tousled hair to do the role. And thus came Shah Rukh Khan into the film who immortalised KKK…..Kiran. Today may be these two Khans are busy getting even with each other, but Shah

Rukh Khan can’t help but thank Aamir for casually rejecting the role of Rahul Mehra and he bagging it. Darr started his decade-old relationship with the Chopras and gave Indian Cinema one of it’s biggest blockbuster of all time, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Actresses too had their fair share of being suddenly lucky and then getting a thumping win at the box-office. Manisha Koirala won over Madhuri Dixit in bagging the lead role in 1942: A Love Story as Madhs couldn’t impress Vidhu Vinod Chopra with her prowess. It might sound surprising and strange, but it’s a fact which changed Manisha’s career altogether. She suddenly became every filmmaker’s first choice.

Similarly, Rani Mukerji too became a sensation only after a host of A-league actresses refused to star in Karan Johar’ Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Apparently, Rani never crossed Karan Johar’s mind when he wrote the character of Tina for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was tailor-made for Akshay Kumar’s wife Twinkle Khanna. He had even called the character Tina because it was Twinkle’s nickname. But she refused the role without any concrete reason and nearly everyone from Raveena Tandon to Madhuri Dixit did the same as they didn’t want to play second fiddle to Kajol. That’s when KJo spotted Rani in Ghulam and approached her. For a newcomer, Dharma Productions’ film is a blessing in disguise, and Rani grabbed the offer. When the film released, all the three main leads, Shah Rukh khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji became a rage. Youngsters just couldn’t help but become friends and fall in love, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai style.

Even before the corporate could take-over the industry, remuneration was a major factor while signing on the dotted lines. Stars with only one solo hit would demand unheard-of prices for working in a film, which led many to opt out of virtually prospective projects. And one name that deserves a first mention here is Kareena Kapoor. Even in a time when she was just doing poo-sized roles in multi-starrer film like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Bebo had the guts to ask sky-high price for starring in Karan’s Kal Ho Na Ho. A shocked KJo immediately dumped her and got Preity Zinta on board. PZ badly needed a big budget and big banner movie to survive in the industry and she couldn’t have asked for more. Kareena was later heard nursing her wounds at a party where she admitted the mistake and even patched up with

KJo. Now she’s working in Karan’s film on jehadis but at what price, is still a mystery.

Others in the league were, Raveena Tandon in Mohra which was supposed to be done by Divya Bharti, John Abraham who bagged Water after Akshay Kumar backed out, Saif Ali Khan, who became a star after Hum Tum released which was rejected by Vivek Oberoi, Karisma Kapoor grabbed the National Award for Best Supporting actress for her role of an energetic and high-sprirted girl, in Dil to Pagal Hai. The role was first offered to Urmila Matondkar but she dumped it for Judaai.

In the recent times, Priyanka Chopra got lucky when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan backed out of Karan’s Dostana thinking her relationship with Abhishek would mire the film and so PC stepped into her shoes. Dostana was a huge hit and Priyanka is now the most-sought after heroine in Bollywood.

Whatever may be the cause of stars rejecting a script be or others accepting it, it nevertheless made stars out of mere unknown faces. Had this not been the case, we wouldn’t have the powerful and towering presence of Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan looming over the industry, who bail it out every time it’s in trouble.

John’s jitters in the sky!

Posted in John Abraham, News on April 13, 2009 by nrmodh

John Abraham is a self-confessed stickler for time. He likes his movies to be on time – as in on schedule – and he likes to be punctual when he’s attending an event.

So when he had an event in Delhi recently, and his flight from Mumbai was delayed, he says he got the heebie-jeebies stuck up there in the air, knowing he was going to be late. “I had a 6.55 pm flight from Mumbai, which took off at 8.30 pm and landed at Delhi at 10.55 pm,” he says – obviously, he was counting the minutes!

“And we were discussing on the flight – this was like the Dubai flight, which takes four hours to reach India! It was the first time I’ve felt that kind of pressure, because I’m someone who’s never late. For me to be stuck 27,000 feet above sea level and not know what to do was quite unnerving. The only thing I told my manager, who was sitting next to me, was, ‘I wish there were parachutes here so we could skydive.’ Because that seemed like the only option, there was no other way of getting down in time!”

No wonder – there’s so much that John is doing, it must be essential for him to manage his time. He’s doing movies, he’s a biker, he walks the ramp, and now, like many others in tinsel town, he’s also turning producer! That’s why he has a new perspective on the producer-multiplex issue now. “I’m also a co-producer now and I understand the ins and outs of the issue. I’m co-producing my upcoming films – with Abbas Tyrewala, Nishikant Kamat and Devan Khote. I feel I understand the concerns of the producers. I think what Aamir and Shah Rukh have done is acknowledged them. And that’s a good thing – to bring in change. I’m glad that they got together as producers rather than as actors and said that we need to get things right. I stand by the producers and the distributors. And whenever we actors are needed, we’ll be there to support the entire film fraternity,” he says.

‘Mahi’s made me watch cricket’

John walked the ramp recently at the Kolkata Fashion Week, and it wasn’t because he’s been a model and has walked the ramp many times. He did it for good friend Mahi – Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni – who’s the brand ambassador of the Kolkata Fashion Week. “I don’t know whether I have time to go to South Africa (for the IPL) or not. But when his team came to Mumbai and they played against the Mohali IPL team last season, I went to watch. It was good fun. I don’t watch much cricket, but with Mahi, I’ve started,” he says. “And it was great fun walking the ramp. I was a model before I was an actor. So if anybody can walk the ramp, honestly, I think I can!”

John’s been busy with the shooting of Hook Ya Crook in Hyderabad. “I was in Hyderabad for a month – getting totally tanned! I’ve gone so brown, yaar. It’s pretty dry and hot there. We have about 15 days of the shoot left. The good part is that we’re ahead of schedule. And you know that a movie finishing on schedule rarely happens. But if people start coming on time, then it’ll happen quite often,” says John.

Priyanka Gandhi is the sexiest woman in India: John Abraham

Posted in John Abraham, News on January 29, 2009 by nrmodh

Forget Aishwarya Rai, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra and all other Bollywood babes who regularly feature in ‘sexiest women’ lists. The red hot John Abraham says that Priyanka Gandhi is “the sexiest woman in India by eons and light years”.

In an interview with GQ, out today, Bollywood’s brainy hunk — he has an MBA, apart from those abs — says of the fabulous Ms G, “I love her to death.” The actor, who is in a seven-year relationship with the stunning Bipasha Basu, believes that Priyanka is “going to be the real power centre in the future”.

Moving on, John tackles the subject of the male ‘dumb blonde’. “I started out as a model at a time when male models were reputed to be cerebrally challenged. I’d done my MBA, and I kept shouting it from the rooftops. But no one was listening,” says the actor.

Recently, folks got a taste of his brainpower when he was on a panel with Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, talking about the economy and inflation. “People were shocked. I’m supposed to be walking out of the water in trunks!” he laughs. “I love to discuss politics, communalism, and democracy. I watched all the American presidential debates. I know what’s happening around me.”

Driving force
What drives John is memory, “just being in everybody’s memory”. He wants to do “less but better stuff”, and on his own terms. “I’ll make my own road, and get there,” he states. “I don’t need to sit in a Ferrari to get there fast; I can sit in an off-roader and reach that destination.”

In private, John has some quirks: “I wash my hands 20 times a day, and all my things have to be arranged the way I like.” And oh, he is always in a relationship, if that’s a quirk. “I don’t know what it’s like to be out of one.” He has flirted, but never to get ahead and it has always landed him “in serious trouble.”

The new male
One of the hottest models and actors around feels that male models today are “great-looking, with better bodies than what we had in those days”, but something is missing. “They don’t seem to have a sense of identity.” And that’s what sets the John Abrahams of this world apart from the regular beefy guy walking the runway.

Rewind: Year’s most memorable dialogues

Posted in Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin, Bipasha Basu, Deepika, John Abraham, Kangana Ranaut, Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir, Salman khan, Shahid Kapur, Shahrukh khan, katrina kaif on December 31, 2008 by nrmodh

Some of them are genuinely funny while others are downright tacky. Good or bad, we list some dialogues that stayed with us after we walked out of the theatre. We think you might want to watch some of the movies again after reading this.

Dostana: This movie has plenty of genuine gems. The boldest one is when Abhishek meets John for the first time and says, while writhing suggestively, “Oh Kunal, Oh Kunal, Kunal, Kunal! I feel like I know you man, pehli baar kissi ka naam apne naam se zyaada suna hai”. Then the other scene where John shouts out, “Hum Gay hai, yeh mera boyfriend hai!” and when Kirron Kher, who plays Abhi’s mom blesses the ‘couple’ and says, “Phullo phallo” and then realizes they are gay and sighs, “Khair chhodo.”

Ghajini: The first half is laugh-out-loud hilarious as the love story between Asin and Aamir develops. The love story Asin fabricates between her character Kalpana and Aamir’s Sanjay Singhania is filled with details. She goes, “Hum Pehli baar Dilli aiport pe mile the, main jaanti nahi thi ki who Sanjay Singhani hai, pur waqt airport pe who mujhe ullu ki tarah ghoor raha tha .Phir flight mein mere paas aake baitha aur kaha Hi I am Sanjay Singhania toh meine bhi bola Hi. Phir Dilli se Mumbai poore raaste uska FM radio chalu tha, kachar, kachar, kachar. Phir suddenly bola, I love you, mujhse shaadi Karogi? Maine bola bachhoo, shaadi byaah ke baate hawa mein thodi the ki jaati hai? Maine bola no, usna bola please, maine bola no, usne bola please, phir maine bola OK. Agar koi ek taang pe khada ho jaayeto tara to aayegi hee.” And then she tells Aamir, unaware of the fact that he is THE Sanjay Singhania, “Air Voice ka Mobile hai, dabba phone hai, main kitna kehti hoon Sanjay se, thoda antenna ghuma kar dekho.”

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi: the dialogues are silly and sweet. How can we forget Raj’s (Shah Rukh’s) very filmi dialogues when he speaks to Taani (Anushka) like: “I am Raj, naam toh suna hoga,” then “Hum hain raahi pyaar ke, phir milenge chalte chalte” (which are titles of Aamir, Salman and SRK’s films respectively) and “Hello Dear, Raj is here, no fear!”

Fashion: It is a Madhur Bhandarkar movie so how can the dialogues lack any punch? When Kittu Gidwani, the head of a modeling agency asks Priyanka, “Tum model banna chahti ho?” so Priyanka confidently replies, “Nahi, Supermodel.” Mugdha, the struggling model says at a lingerie photo shoot, “Itne paise mein itna ich milega!” When Priyanka can’t handle the success, she makes fun of her friend played by Mugdha, “It’s about attitude baby, do-chaar assignements karne se koi model nahi ban jata.” And the way Kangana addresses her parasite of a boyfriend is annoying but it stays with you, “You Bast**d!” is what she ‘lovingly calls him.

Yuvvraaj: Now this movie is bad but the amateurish dialogues will help you and your friends have a laugh over how silly the movie is. Sample these gems. Katrina tells Salman, “Jisne apne baap ko barah saal se sapne mein bhi na dekha ho, woh beta nahi, hardcore anti-family man hai,” then there is Zayed shouting in the middle of nowhere and that too in Hindi, “Please koi meri madad karo, mujhe chhod ke mat jao,” Salman telling Anil, “Drink beer with those who are dear and bring them near” and Salman’s mama telling him, “Well done my son” to which Salman replies, “Well done toh abhi hua hai, done done abhi baki hai.” And we can’t figure the sense in it at all!

Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye: Dibakar Banerjee’s Abhay Deol starrer may not have done well but it is one heck of a laugh riot. Some memorable dialogues are: Abhay Deol telling the media why he is arrested, “Main toh bahar football khel raha tha, unhone (the police) kaha ki andar aake khel lo,” the deceptive Paresh Rawal butters thief Abhay Deol, “aap jaise log hi India ka future hai,” a TV host complaining about the effect of Sansani on his life, “Main yeh sansani kehne se thak gaya hu. Jab meri biwi poochti hai ki khana kaise hai, mere moo se nikalta hai Sansani!” Abhay talking about a dog he has stolen, “High society ka dog hai, zara pyaar se bulao” and of course, “Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye!”

Bachna Ae Haseeno: Bachna ae Haseeno may not be a great film but it was surely very entertaining with YRF making digs at their own films. Here are some dialogues we remember: Ranbir making fun of classic romantic film DDLJ, “Badi boring picture thi, main toh so gaya tha. Kya hua tha usme?,” when Ranbir and his friend make a plan for Bips to dump him by calling strippers to his house and he says, “Happy Independence Day” (the film released on 15 August this year), Hiten’s reaction to Deepika being a taxi driver, “Tum ek taxi driver ko leke aaye ho? Intelligent toh mera watchman bhi hai” and Ranbir telling Deepika in the end: “Main tumhare saath hamesha rehna chahta hu, yeh naya wala forever nahi, forever wala forever.”

Rock On: Farhan Akhtar dished out some unforgettable one-liners in Dil Chahta Hai so how is it possible that the dialogues of Rock On will be any less? Here are some: Farhan telling Purab, “KD, iss band mein koi takeover nahi Karega, issi liye band ka naam Magik hai!”, Prachi says she doesn’t know what’s going on in Farhan’s heart, so Koel replies, “Uske dil mein stock market ki rates hi milengi!”, Farhan arguing with Prachi saying, “Haan maine zindagi mein koi compromises ki hai par compromise kaun nahi karta”, Purab joking with Luke when he says he has taken some pills, “Waise aaj raat mein free hu!” and welcoming Arjun on stage in the end, “Please welcome mera Bhai, mera Dost and Magik’s lead guitarist, Joe Mascarenhas!”

Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na: Jaane tu was a formula film filled with funny dialogues. My favourite is the way Prateik addresses Imran, “Ek tu achha dikta nahi, do tu gareeb hai, teen to aisa gayega, toh kaunsi ladki tujhko pasand karegi Jay?” Imran replies, “Koi gareeb, badsoorat ladki mil hi jaayegi jo mujhse bhi bura gaati ho!” Then there is Genelia’s dialogue, “Jay tu mere liye ek tough ladka dhoond aur mein tere liye ek stupid, silly, romantic ladki dhoondti hoon,” and Naseeruddin Shah’s favourite phrase, “you can take the Rathore out of Ranjhore but you can never take out the Ranjhore out of a Rathore”, the way Ratna Pathak asserts when she sees Imran’s Jay riding a horse in the end “Woh mere pati ka beta tha” and the song which Imran sings in his tuneless voice, “Tere mujhse hai pehla ka naata koi, yuhi nahi dil lubhata koi, jaane tuuu, ya jaaane na, maane tuu, yaa maane naaa…”

katrina kaif with saif in race

Race: The most plot-less yet fast paced and fun movie of the year had some corny, pretending-to-be-deep dialogues. Like Akshaye commenting, “yeh toh bahut hasta hai” to which Saif ‘cleverly’ replies, “Jo aadmi hasta bahut hai, who rota bhi bahut hai” and Katrina crying over Saif’s ‘murder’, “Woh mere boss hi nahi, woh mere husband the!”, Saif summing up his ‘bond’ with Akshaye in the end, “Hum dono main fark sirf itna hai ki mein jeetne ke liye khelta hu aur tun mujhe harane ke liye khelte ho”
