Shilpa Shetty

Johannesburg, May 21, Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty will join American R&B sensation Akon as he sings his Grammy award winning “Smack That” at the closing ceremony of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Wanderers here Sunday night.

Organisers also said here Wednesday that Katrina Kaif will join a troupe of Indian and South African dancers led by award-winning choreographer Shiamak Davar to perform the Oscar-winning A.R. Rahman song “Jai Ho” from “Slumdog Millionaire”.

The two actors will be the only ones performing at the finale, ending widespread speculation here that a bevy of Bollywood beauties would feature at the closing ceremony.

Caribbean music legend Eddy Grant will perform the ever popular “Walking on Sunshine” and his anti-apartheid hit “Gimme Hope Jo’anna”, which became an anthem in the days when the white minority government of South Africa strictly regulated everything from music and song to social gatherings.

The five-week IPL will end on a high note for Shilpa performance-wise, but this will be clouded by the fact that her Rajasthan Royals team have no hope of retaining their champion status from the inaugural series last year.

Other highlights on the night will include a perfectly synchronised piece featuring renowned percussionist Shivamani and a group of Indian and South African drummers.

Apart from the various musical acts, the crowd will also be introduced to the Miss Bollywood IPL South Africa finalists, culminating with the crowning of the winner of the beauty competition, who will get a guided tour through Bollywood as one of her prizes.

This apart, 1,500 flying lanterns will be lit and released while a thrilling pyrotechnics show using several thousand rounds of fireworks will light up the Johannesburg skyline as final awards signal the end of an unprecedented cricket event which was keenly taken up by locals, who also opened their hearts to the thousands of Indians who came to watch the series.

IPL prevents Shilpa from voting

Posted in IPL, News, Shilpa Shetty on May 2, 2009 by nrmodh
Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has flown to India from South Africa to cast his vote in the 2009 general elections. Actress Shilpa Shetty regrets that she won’t be able to exercise her franchise this time because of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“I just regret the fact that I won’t be in India to cast my vote; I really wanted to this time. Elections have to be taken seriously if you are a responsible citizen. Unfortunately with the unexpected turn of events and the IPL being shifted to SA it’s become difficult. I would not miss voting for anything otherwise,” the actress posted on her blog.

“But to all those Indian citizens who want the best for our country, now is the time to make the decision, don’t waste your democratic right to choose. Vote!” she added.

Shilpa is the co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals team of the IPL.

Did Preity Zinta upset some fans in SA

Posted in IPL, News, Preity Zinta on May 2, 2009 by nrmodh

Our dimpled darlin’ rarely upsets her fans (though sometimes she does get into a brawl with mediafellas), and owing to her eternal bubbly image on screen, she has a huge kiddie fan following too.

So ZOOM was really surprised when recently a fan wrote to us ranting about her ‘once favourite’ star – PZ. Apparently, Preity Zinta was doing a promotional event for the media with her team on the beaches of South Africa; and was so heavily into doing the drill that she was inadvertently brusque with a female fan. The girl fan simply requested her to pose for a picture and, “she bluntly refused,” said the disappointed fan.

She also added in an email to us, “Preity, in her enthusiasm may have forgotten that the time on the beach was for crowd interaction with the players and for giving youngsters an opportunity to mingle with the sporting stars. So I was hurt when I was ignored.” Okay gal, we understand your grouse, but honestly, PZ is hardly like that. And stars do get busy and involved. Also, when it comes to work, everything else is secondary for Ms Zinta. And being a glam-gal in the sporting biz is no mean task.

C’mon gal, be a sport, next time around we promise ya that PZ will pose for pics first, and then go back to the field. We at ZOOM will ensure that and capture it on camera too. And we can see Preity flashing those ‘dees’ already!

Preity has a Hollywood look-alike

Posted in IPL, News, Preity Zinta on May 2, 2009 by nrmodh
Recently, in South Africa, while Bollywood’s bubbly actress Preity Zinta was cheering for her IPL team, she was mistaken for Monica Bellucci!

Since the actress turns up for the matches with bare minimal to no make-up, the westerners have been thinking they are getting a glimpse of the Italian hottie. We wonder if Preity is aware of this yet.

SRK’s Blog: "We have been hit and hit hard"

Posted in IPL, News, Shahrukh khan on May 2, 2009 by nrmodh

Keep the Faith

You must have heard a thousand times that the way to victory does not lie in how hard you can hit; but how hard you can take the hit. And I am not telling you anything new. Every teacher says that to his student, every coach says that to his team and I am sure John has said this to you guys enough times already, just as a father says that to his son.

When they all say this, in their hearts they also wish and hope that their team does not get hit; it doesn’t have to learn to win that way. A father feels, let my son win without ever getting hit; but you still say this to them because you know this world is a hard place. Games are a hard battlefield…your opponent wants to win as much as you do…so there is always going to be a chance that you will get hit. The best of us get hit…Mohammad Ali got hit…Carl Lewis got hit…John Buchanan must have been hit…Sourav Ganguly here has been hit several times.

So let’s start from the fact that yes we have been hit already. So this is a good thing. A very good thing! We have been hit and hit hard, so the difficult part is over now. We all should accept that, we do lie at this point very nearly on the floor. So now comes the part, which is more important. The part that we need to show everyone around us, that we can take a hit; we can fall down; but we also know how to scrape ourselves from the floor and continue to fight. We still can take a few hits more and still fight back. Lots of people are saying lots of things about us, but none of them are right. The only right thing is that the owners have faith in this team, the coach has faith in this team; as a matter of fact the team has faith in this team. So there is no problem here at all. Just go out and play to have a great time…enjoy yourselves because pressure only builds more pressure. There is no need to prove anything amongst us. We all trust we are a great bunch of people and cricketers.

One lakh people out there have only one prayer in their hearts, god give our kids strength and a bit of luck to beat the shit out of their opponents. God will listen and deliver today, but just to make sure run faster, hit harder and go out destroy the opponent.

Lets play this like our first game ever as if we have to prove it to the world that we are good and can hit, then lets play this game like the last game of our lives, because we need to prove it to ourselves…that we can take being hit and get up from the floor.

I say a prayer my father taught me; whatever your faith, lets get together and say it… “Nasrun minal lahe wah fatahun kareeb …”

No touching, please, says Preity

Posted in IPL, News, Preity Zinta on April 23, 2009 by nrmodh

Preity Zinta who’s in South Africa with her cricket team is cool as a cucumber most of the time.

But when people whom she barely even knows get familiar with her, she finds it hard to take. Though she’s most charming, sweet and often genteel with fans, Zinta likes to keep a wee bit of distance. She tells us, “I am fine with people posing with me for pictures, but what I don’t like is when some put their hand around my waist or shoulders! When you don’t know someone too well, it gets awkward and this is something I just don’t like.” So next time you try to put your arm around this lady, remember touching is touché.

Insider leaks KKR information on blog

Posted in IPL, News, Shahrukh khan on April 23, 2009 by nrmodh

Shah Rukh Khan is not going to be a happy person for too long; especially since an anonymous blogger seems to be telling the world what’s happening in the green room.

The blogger is penning down details of team strategy, happenings at the team meeting and gossip in the dressing rooms and other private circles.

The blog’s authenticity hasn’t been proven yet. The writer writes using either code names for the players (Lord Almighty for Saurav Ganguly, Sheikh of the Tweak for Shane Warne).

The management has condemned the poison pen writer and hopes to bring a stop to his posts soon.

Neil: No Mugdha allowed!

Posted in IPL, News on April 23, 2009 by nrmodh

Neil Nitin Mukesh has very reluctantly agreed to drop his pants for Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail.

To make Neil feel comfortable for the torture scene, Madhur did not allow anyone inside except the cinematographer in addition to himself.

Poor Mugdha and the rest of the cast were couped up in their vanity vans for a good three hours while Neil completed the shoot.

Mugdha spent her ‘break’ catching up on the IPL matches.

Exclusive: Shah Rukh Khan on his Knights

Posted in IPL, News, Shahrukh khan on April 23, 2009 by nrmodh

Kolkata Knight Riders have registered their first win in IPL season 2 and team owner Shah Rukh Khan now wants to put all the controversies behind and concentrate on cricket. He spoke to Vimal Kumar after the victory celebrations.

SRK: It’s going to be difficult at times. People are not going to understand from outside. All I can tell you is: “You can love us, you can hate us, but you can’t ignore us. We will try our best as humbly as possible. We will try and entertain everyone. We are open to be talking about the team the way we wish to. We love you and we are going to try our best. Whichever the part of the country you are in, make sure you are proud of Kolkata Knight Riders.”

Q: IPL is shifted to South Africa. Rain is playing spoilsport. Your take on that

SRK: Weather is not something that even I can control or, you can control. It’s unfortunate. But apparently, it is not seasonal rain here, either. So things happen like this. When the moment is big, the occasion is really important, small things can spoil it. But the idea was the IPL2 should be held. So forget the rain. Whenever it rains we just sing a good rain song. But beyond that, yes it’s unfortunate. I feel sad that some of the matches are getting curtailed because of rain.

Q: You must be feeling happy that your team has started winning.

SRK: I don’t think we have started winning. We have twelve more matches to go. I can’t be happy so soon. But I am very happy that the team has started playing together. And inshe allah… as we go along the next twelve matches we will play together. As long as we play together, winning or losing is not important. I think if we are able to bring the spirit of the Kolkata Knight Riders into this, that is more important. So I am happy for the kids. I think they were very depressed after losing the first match. I am happy that they are happy now. But a long way to go.
