The trick behind Akshay's double role in 8x10 Tasveer

Filmi double roles have always fascinated us. To make them possible, techniques like shooting in several layers, shooting with the help of chroma are common practice. But if we talk about Akshay Kumar’s 8×10 Tasveer, there is certainly something unique.

Akshay’s double role: The best sequence and the most challenging one too! No chroma shots, but frame by frame rotoscoping (technique of cutting out the images) done by Vfx house Prime Focus. All of Akshay’s shots were shot twice in two different layers using a dummy character in front of him. Later, the dummy character was rotoed out from each frame and was replaced by Akshay shot in a separate layer.

“It was a long sequence and was shot on the boat where everything was shaking. As the part of the post production, we had to roto out Akshay in each and every frame; besides, all the shots needed to be stabilized because of the shake. The scene where both the Akshays are fighting was the most challenging one,” says Merzin Tavaria, Creative Head, Prime Focus.

Movie Review : 8×10 Tasveer

Posted in Ayesha Takiya, Movie Review, akshay kumar on April 5, 2009 by nrmodh

8 x 10 TASVEER disappoints. The film goes wrong, in fact horribly wrong, in the penultimate 20-25 minutes, which is the lifeline of any suspense-thriller. Nagesh Kukunoor has missed the bus this time!

Nagesh Kukunoor enters a new zone with 8 x 10 TASVEER: Suspense-thriller. His choice of the genre and subject material is also right. Yet, 8 x 10 TASVEER goes wrong, horribly wrong.

Now what was that? This is one question that haunts you at the end of the show. And, seriously, you want to direct this question to Kukunoor, who is also credited as the writer of this film.

Okay, let’s dissect… The concept is interesting. The atmosphere is perfect. The mystery deepens with each passing minute. Just when you thought that Kukunoor had pulled it off, a twist in the tale pulls the carpet off your feet. The film crumbles and the impression generated by some brilliantly executed sequences evaporate into thin air.

For any whodunit to succeed, it ought to hold your interest till the very last frame. Most importantly, the answers raised in the screenplay have to be convincing and justified. But 8 x 10 TASVEER gets unbearable towards the penultimate 20-25 minutes. When the mask is taken off the killer’s face, you are surprised. But the reasons that compelled him to act that way are childish. What happened, Mr. Kukunoor?

To cut a long story short, this tasveer is out of focus!

8 x 10 TASVEER is about Jai [Akshay Kumar], who possesses supernatural powers. Jai is of Indian origin who works as a forest ranger in Canada. His life is shattered by a loss of an important person in his life – his father [Benjamin Gilani]. This personal tragedy leads him to use his unique supernatural powers to unravel the mystery.

var zflag_nid=”585″; var zflag_cid=”829″; var zflag_sid=”36″; var zflag_width=”300″; var zflag_height=”250″; var zflag_sz=”9″;

Now let’s get to the root of the problem: The discrepancies in the script. Of course, 8 x 10 TASVEER is a whodunit and it would be sacrilege to reveal the end or the identity of the killer, but the reasons that compel the murderer to commit crime after crime are unbelievable and far from convincing.

The moment the truth is out in the open, from that point onwards, the writer doesn’t have convincing answers to offer. There are so many gaps that remain wide open till the end.

Nagesh Kukunoor goes two steps ahead as a technician, but five steps behind as a storyteller. The film has been shot stylishly and the breath-taking locales of Canada and South Africa only give the film a picture perfect look. But the screenplay is faulty. So faulty that you exit the auditorium with questions and more questions in your mind. The outcome fails to convince.

Vikas Sivaraman’s cinematography is top notch. The locales are splendid and the DoP has captured them with élan. There’s no scope for music in the film and the three songs [opening titles, romantic song and end credits] are passable. The background score [Salim-Sulaiman] is electrifying.

Akshay pitches in a sincere performance. 8 x 10 TASVEER is a complete departure from the kind of films the actor is popular for and it only goes to prove that he’s ready to experiment. Ayesha is natural. Sharmila Tagore is graceful. Jaaved Jaaferi is first-rate. Girish Karnad, Benjamin Gilani, Ananth Mahadevan and Rushaad Rana are perfect in their respective roles.

On the whole, 8 x 10 TASVEER disappoints. The film goes wrong, in fact horribly wrong, in the penultimate 20-25 minutes, which is the lifeline of any suspense-thriller. Nagesh Kukunoor has missed the bus this time!

Ayesha Takia who got married just few weeks back with her long time boyfriend Farhan Azmi is ready to face the camera in Aprial for her next venture Phir Tum Mil Gaye.

We spoke to our close source
“Before marriage decision, she had signed Revathy’s film “Phir Tum Mil Gaye” with R.Madhavan. Jaya Bachchan and Raveena Tondon are in the lead. She liked the subject of the film which is a woman oriented one.

Moreover in this film, Jaya Bachchan plays her adopted mother which we can hardly see in any Bollywood films.

This subject was also liked by Farhan. The shooting of this film will take place whole of April in Mumbai and its going to finish in one schedule of 30 days. Its only after completing this project will Ayesha think of taking on any other project.”

The film is directed by Revathy and its a remake of Tamil film.

What’s happening in Bollywood

Posted in Ayesha Takiya, Events, News, Photos:, Shilpa Shetty on March 3, 2009 by nrmodh

Shilpa launches her chain of spas, glowing bride Ayesha Azmi (nee Takia) and some peek-a-boo.

Bollywood Star to Businesswoman: After the IPL, Shilpa launches her chain of Medispas with Iosis’ Kiran Bawa. Kiran looks great in her all-white churidaar. While Shilpa looks hot, we wish her dress wasn’t leopard print.

The Wedding: Farhan and Ayesha Azmi greet the guests at their wedding reception held at Cricket Club of India, South Mumbai.

God Bless the Newlyweds: This is how a bride should glow. Ayesha looks so happy and pretty in her heavy lehenga while Farhan looks smart in his blue sherwani. He is so happy to have Ayesha by his side.

Oh No! We know that Nauheed Cyrusi doesn’t have movies but how desparate is she for publicity? She turned up at Ayesha’s wedding in a blouse that quite literally showed off her assets. It is in really bad taste.

Kal aur Aaj: Yesteryear’s item girl Bindu with today’s item girl Rakhi Sawant at a regional awards ceremony. Both are well dressed.

Made in China: Looks like Deepshikha is taking her role in Chinchpokli a tad seriously. She turned up in a hideous Chinese outfit for the music launch of Marathi film Made in China.

Bollywood Mummy, Daddy ke Saath

Posted in Ayesha Takiya, Deepika, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Prachi Desai, Priyanka Chopra, Rakesh Roshan, Ranbir, Shilpa Shetty on January 5, 2009 by nrmodh

Your favourite Bollywood star may be all grown up but they still like their parents to accompany them to certain events. Take a look

Deepika with dad Prakash Padukone

Daddy’s Darling: Deepika with dad Prakash Padukone on the sets of Indian Idol. She also celebrated her birthday there.

Shilpa and Shamita Shetty with their mother Sunanda
Pretty Women: Shilpa and Shamita Shetty with their mother Sunanda at a book launch ceremony.

Prachi Desai with her mother
Mommy Dearest: Prachi Desai wanted her mom-cum-manager to be around when she attended the V Shantaram Awards ceremony where she was nominated in the Best Debut category. Her mom also accompanies her to the film sets.

Priyanka Chopra with her daddy
Star Support: Priyanka is a daddy’s girl and she was there to lend her starry appeal to her doctor father Ashok Chopra’s medical camp in Andheri.

Ayesha Takiya with mummy mother
My Mother, My Manager: Ayesha Takia’s mother Farida is extremely protective of her daughter; so much so that she answers her phone and decides whether Ayesha will talk to you or not. No wonder Ayesha has still retained her innocent charm in the big bad world of Bollywood

 Ranbir with daddy
Proud Daddy: Rishi Kapoor is beaming with pride at the launch of his son Ranbir’s debut film Saawariya. Mother Neetu Kapoor is Ranbir’s manager.

Hrithik Roshan and Rakesh Roshan
Not Without My Son: Rakesh Roshan hasn’t made a movie without son Hrithik since Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai in 2000 and he doesn’t need to when he has a super star and superb actor at home. They are currently working on romantic thriller Kites.

Farhan Akhtar
Like Father, Like Son: Son Farhan who sounds exactly like his father Javed followed in his father’s footsteps and became a story writer. He went a step ahead to become a cult film director, actor, singer and Rockstar. Daddy Akhtar must be so proud.

Fashion Disasters of 2008

Posted in Ayesha Takiya, Deepika, Jiah Khan, Mallika, Ranbir, Salman khan, katrina kaif on January 1, 2009 by nrmodh

We take a look at Bollywood hotties who forgot to look at themselves in the mirror before walking out of their apartments. And we haven’t included Vidya Balan for a change.

Tunic Terror: Why is Mallika dressed like a tart? She shows us how to make Ed Hardy clothes look bad. She has forgotten her pants and the velvet shoes are plain hideous. It’s a shame that she has a killer body and wears such disastrous outfits.

Forgot My Pants: Jiah Khan is another one who forgot her pants. Her jacket looks like its bought off the road, the boots suck and what’s up with the panty hose and crimped hair? Sad, man!

Nettie Nymph: Shriya’s face looks sweet like an innocent school girl but her outfit is a slutty disaster. Her white bra can be seen through her tight top, sleazy item girls wear those netted leggings and the baby pink skirt and tacky sandals do nothing to salvage the outfit.

Dirty Yellow: This bikini-flower-dress ensemble is suited to a beach party and not a movie launch! The red clashes with the yellow and she looks like a streetwalker

Village Belle: Celina’s attempt to not flaunt her figure has failed. The blue matches her eyes but the print is so depressing. And we have no idea what exactly this outfit is all about.

salman and katrina
Blingy Add-On: Seems like the shiny material was added as an after-thought as Salman wouldn’t like Kat showing off her long legs. There is an excess of embroidery on her dress and the colour is drab!

When in Doubt Wear Black: Sush is trying to camouflage her weight gain by wearing black. But the shiny leopard frills ruin the outfit.

deepika and ranbir
Colour Chaos: Why is slender Deepika floating in this oversized, extra-colourful monstrosity? Only she knows!

Dirty Taxi: Black and yellow equals taxi and this combo is no good here. Is Shilpa blind not to realize that the print is bad, the shoes are ugly and the lemon yellow clutch sticks out like a sore thumb?

Curtain Call: Ayesha was probably in a hurry and tore down her curtain to make a devastatingly dull dress out of it.
