Ramu’s India 24/7 is now Rann again

Posted in Amitabh Bachchan, News, Ram Gopal Verma on April 20, 2009 by nrmodh

bachchanapril18_full Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s media-based film, whose title had recently been changed to “India 24/7″, is now back to its original title “Rann”, says megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

Bachchan, who plays the owner of a news channel called ‘India 24/7′ in the film, revealed the new development on his blog and has also put up a picture from the movie.

“The photograph is from my film that I shoot for these days – Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rann’. Yes… It is back to being called that since the title we wanted – ‘India 24/7′ is with another producer who refuses to part with it,” Bachchan posted on his blog.

“This (the picture) is my character – Vijay Harshvardhan Malik, the owner of the TV channel “India 24/7″. And that is where the story of this film unfolds, which is why RGV (Ram Gopal Varma) felt that “India 24/7″ as the title of the film was appropriate.

“But since someone else has it and has refused to part with it, despite our requests, even though they have no intention of starting a film by that title, we felt we should leave the issue and move on giving the other producer our warmest wishes and greetings,” he added.

“Rann” is Varma’s attempt to “expose the Indian media” and apart from the Big B, it stars Paresh Rawal, Rajat Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Manisha Koirala, Purab Kohli and Gul Panag.

From luck by chance to instant stardom!

Posted in Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham on April 15, 2009 by nrmodh

Luck is a major factor in determining a nobody’s rise to instant stardom in Bollywood. There are many instances in the Hindi film industry where one’s casual refusal to do a certain role has made another a star. As rightly showed in Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut Luck By Chance, Vikram (Farhan Akhtar) becomes a star after his film, which was dumped by star actor Zafar Khan (Hrithik Roshan), becomes a huge hit. While many refuse scripts on the pretext of substantial roles, others just don’t like the script. But it has always helped a mere first-timer to prove his talent and excel in it too.

The most significant replacement bid of all time was Zanjeer. Prakash Mehra’s fiery script couldn’t impress the likes of Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Raj Kumar to don the grease paint for the film. The role of a righteous, incensed cop with a tumultuous past didn’t seem interesting to these stalwarts who wanted many changes to be made in the script suiting their image. While Dharmendra chickened out on the pretext of date issues, Dev Anand wanted to turn it into a musical and Raj Kumar wanted it to be shot in Chennai.

Finally on Pran’s insistence, who played the role of Sher Khan in the film, Prakash Mehra reluctantly signed a virtually unknown lanky actor riding on seven flops, Amitabh Bachchan. And rest as they say was history with the film becoming a big success and the emergence of a superstar for whom no role is difficult to portray. Amitabh Bachchan also became synonymous to the famous epithet of ‘The Angry Young Man’ of Bollywood. The man is yet to age at 66 and gets role tailor-made for him even today!

Same thing happened during the filming of Don. Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Dharmendra refused to do the film because they were too conscious of their image. Don was a story of a smuggler and a Police Inspector’s drive to bring him to book by getting a duplicate placed in his place when the real Don dies. Since the lead character had grey shades, the stalwarts backed out as they thought it might tarnish their goody-two-shoes image in the audience’s mind. And so Amitabh Bachchan volunteered to step in and Don became Big B’s one of the most enticing film ever.

It might sound as if it was just Amitabh Bachchan who had all the luck of being at the right place at the right time. But it’s not true. Even our Baadshah was lucky by chance when he bagged Darr. Shah Rukh Khan became a sensation, though as an anti-hero, with Darr. In fact, he was the first actor who initiated his Bollywood career with negative roles, First Baazigar and then Darr. Coming to the latter, Darr was a Yash Chopra film. So quite obviously, whoever is associated with it, will benefit from it all through his/her life. But Aamir Khan thought otherwise. He too was conscious of his image with the public. Post Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Dil, he became the chocolate hero of all teenage girls and he just didn’t want to do away with that image. So he refused to play the role of a stammering, obsessive and aggressive lover, Rahul Mehra. There’s where Yash Chopra thought of signing a nobody and zeroed in on a thin guy with tousled hair to do the role. And thus came Shah Rukh Khan into the film who immortalised KKK…..Kiran. Today may be these two Khans are busy getting even with each other, but Shah

Rukh Khan can’t help but thank Aamir for casually rejecting the role of Rahul Mehra and he bagging it. Darr started his decade-old relationship with the Chopras and gave Indian Cinema one of it’s biggest blockbuster of all time, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Actresses too had their fair share of being suddenly lucky and then getting a thumping win at the box-office. Manisha Koirala won over Madhuri Dixit in bagging the lead role in 1942: A Love Story as Madhs couldn’t impress Vidhu Vinod Chopra with her prowess. It might sound surprising and strange, but it’s a fact which changed Manisha’s career altogether. She suddenly became every filmmaker’s first choice.

Similarly, Rani Mukerji too became a sensation only after a host of A-league actresses refused to star in Karan Johar’ Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Apparently, Rani never crossed Karan Johar’s mind when he wrote the character of Tina for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was tailor-made for Akshay Kumar’s wife Twinkle Khanna. He had even called the character Tina because it was Twinkle’s nickname. But she refused the role without any concrete reason and nearly everyone from Raveena Tandon to Madhuri Dixit did the same as they didn’t want to play second fiddle to Kajol. That’s when KJo spotted Rani in Ghulam and approached her. For a newcomer, Dharma Productions’ film is a blessing in disguise, and Rani grabbed the offer. When the film released, all the three main leads, Shah Rukh khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji became a rage. Youngsters just couldn’t help but become friends and fall in love, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai style.

Even before the corporate could take-over the industry, remuneration was a major factor while signing on the dotted lines. Stars with only one solo hit would demand unheard-of prices for working in a film, which led many to opt out of virtually prospective projects. And one name that deserves a first mention here is Kareena Kapoor. Even in a time when she was just doing poo-sized roles in multi-starrer film like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Bebo had the guts to ask sky-high price for starring in Karan’s Kal Ho Na Ho. A shocked KJo immediately dumped her and got Preity Zinta on board. PZ badly needed a big budget and big banner movie to survive in the industry and she couldn’t have asked for more. Kareena was later heard nursing her wounds at a party where she admitted the mistake and even patched up with

KJo. Now she’s working in Karan’s film on jehadis but at what price, is still a mystery.

Others in the league were, Raveena Tandon in Mohra which was supposed to be done by Divya Bharti, John Abraham who bagged Water after Akshay Kumar backed out, Saif Ali Khan, who became a star after Hum Tum released which was rejected by Vivek Oberoi, Karisma Kapoor grabbed the National Award for Best Supporting actress for her role of an energetic and high-sprirted girl, in Dil to Pagal Hai. The role was first offered to Urmila Matondkar but she dumped it for Judaai.

In the recent times, Priyanka Chopra got lucky when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan backed out of Karan’s Dostana thinking her relationship with Abhishek would mire the film and so PC stepped into her shoes. Dostana was a huge hit and Priyanka is now the most-sought after heroine in Bollywood.

Whatever may be the cause of stars rejecting a script be or others accepting it, it nevertheless made stars out of mere unknown faces. Had this not been the case, we wouldn’t have the powerful and towering presence of Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan looming over the industry, who bail it out every time it’s in trouble.

Delhi – 6 : How they shot it all?

Posted in Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Leaked Stuffs, Photos: on March 4, 2009 by nrmodh
Delhi - 6 : How they shot it all?

Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra’s Delhi-6 might have failed to woo the audience at the box office, but if one were to talk about the visual effects (vfx) work in the movie – done by the couple of Indian studios – the effort is really commendable.

Various vfx techniques, right from compositing, matte painting, background plates (BG), wire removal and many more, went in creating shots which portrayed the look and feel of real Delhi, though most of the sequences were not actually shot in Delhi for security reasons.

For a behind-the-scenes vfx case study of the movie, we spoke to Chennai-based post production house Prasad EFX, which has worked on close to 425 shots for the movie. With around 50 artists, it took 3.5 months to complete all the shots. Kilari Hima Kumar, Executive Producer-VFX, Prasad EFX says, “It was a great and wonderful experience working with the director Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra and the team under the supervision of Craig Mumma – the vfx supervisor for the movie.”

Apart from Prasad EFX, Mumbai-based Prana Studios also worked on few shots. Here is the breakdown of a few key shots worked on by Prasad EFX:

Terrace Extension

The terrace shots of Delhi 6 were shot on set in Jaipur but were given the feel of Delhi in post production. Original backgrounds were replaced by images shot in Delhi. The key challenge in this shot was extending the generic terraces, building the geographic landmarks of the area like Jama Masjid, Golden Temple, Red Fort, with their respective geographical positions.

“Craig Mumma had suggested and guided the creation of a 360 degree Delhi geo-environment in 3D with using Delhi terrace photographs. Then we tracked the shots and placed the geos in the respective positions. We had executed about 164 terrace extension shots in this film,” says Himakumar.

Delhi - 6 : How they shot it all?

Birth sequence:

The entire sequence was shot in green matte and was later composited with another sequence which was shot separately. “Our challenge involved 3D tracking of shots and matching static BG plates. We had stitched the BG’s in 3D, composited the environment and matched to the shots. (No of shots – 15)

Delhi - 6 : How they shot it all?

Brooklyn bridge car sequence:

The Brooklyn bridge sequences were shot in green matte at the sets and were later composited with the BG plates, shot separately. (No of shots: 18)

Delhi - 6 : How they shot it all?

Taj Mahal interior sequence:

The Taj Mahal sequence was actually shot in green matte because of problem with permissions. Later using the reference of old building and images, a separate new background and location was created in computer graphics (CG) and composited with chroma background. The light coming from the window and falling over Sonam Kapoor, was created in 3D. (No of shots: 11)

Delhi - 6 : How they shot it all?

Heaven sequence:

After shooting Amitabh and Abhishek on a chroma background, the heaven was designed on the basis of the real Delhi terrace with heavenly white look. The background was made through matte painting and the environment was computer generated. (No of shots :15)

Movie Review : Delhi 6

Posted in Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Movie Review, Sonam Kapoor on February 22, 2009 by nrmodh
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra thinks out of the box and it’s more than evident now. First AKS, then RANG DE BASANTI, now DELHI 6. A two-liner of the story may give you an impression that it’s similar to UTV’s earlier outing SWADES, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An American of Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in India. But DELHI 6 bites more than it can chew.

Set in old Delhi, the screenplay [Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey] takes its own sweet time to come to the point. In fact, the entire first half is dedicated to the sundry characters in the bylanes of old Delhi, where several stories run parallel with the main plot… The two warring brothers [Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra] and the wall that divides the two; the daughter of the house [Sonam Kapoor] aspires to be an ‘Indian Idol’ contestant; a moneylender’s [Prem Chopra] wife has an illicit relationship with one of his lecherous debtors [Cyrus Sahukar]; an ‘untouchable’ [Divya Dutta] makes more sense than the so-called thekedaars of samaj; a friend of the family [Rishi Kapoor] has still not forgotten his first love [Tanvi Azmi]. Oh yes, there’s also a ‘Kaala Bandar’ who spreads havoc in the locality. Really, Rakeysh tries to pack in multiple stories in those 2.18 hours.

But, alas, the problem is that barring a few individualistic sequences, you don’t carry the film home. The film is engaging in bits and spurts. Worse, it tends to get monotonous, preachy and boring and the end is so bizarre, you actually want to ask the writers, ‘Hey guys, you okay?’

Let’s cut a long story short: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra misses the bus this time.

DELHI 6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first time, to drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire and spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the soil she was born in.

In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the religion and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. He believes that Dadi had left her family and loved ones back in America, only to realize that how wrong he was.

The warmth and affection of the neighbourhood embraces him with open arms. Amidst all this he meets the beautiful Bittu [Sonam Kapoor], who wants to break free from the typical Indian social structure, to whom Roshan is destined to lose his heart.

That Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is an accomplished storyteller is evident in several individualistic scenes. Note the scene when Vijay Raaz slaps Abhishek and Abhishek slaps him back. Also, portions in the second hour, when a Baba [Akhilendra Mishra] triggers off the Mandir-Masjid talk and divides the two communities, is very well structured. The sequences are disturbing and the writers and director succeed in exposing the fickle-minded people residing in the locality.

But the screenplay isn’t foolproof. The romantic track is the weakest link in the enterprise. The love story falls flat. Also, the ending is so abstract that an average moviegoer would find it difficult to comprehend what the actual culmination is. The sequence in the end, when Amitabh and Abhishek have a conversation, looks weird. In fact, ridiculous. What was the need to have this sequence? It makes no sense. Even the Ram Leela sequences, interspersed at regular intervals, are forced in the screenplay.

Rakeysh’s handling of the subject is exemplary at places. But the writing [faulty at times] as also the execution of the material isn’t the type that would appeal to all sections of moviegoers. A.R. Rahman’s music is outstanding; it’s easily amongst his finest works. ‘Masakali’, ‘Ye Dilli Hai Mere Yaar’, ‘Rehna Tu’, ‘Maula’ and ‘Genda Phool’ are amazing tracks. Ditto for Prasoon Joshi’s lyrics; they’re gems. Binod Pradhan’s cinematography is brilliant. Watch the Jama Masjid sequence [breath-taking] or the camera movements in the bylanes of old Delhi. Just one word to describe the output: Incredible!

Abhishek doesn’t work. Also, his American accent looks fake. Sonam is likable. Waheeda Rahman enacts her part well. Rishi Kapoor is wasted. He deserved a better role. Amongst supporting actors, Om Puri [powerful], Pawan Malhotra [flawless], Vijay Raaz [tremendous], Deepak Dobriyal [genuine], Divya Dutta [admirable] and Cyrus Sahukar [likable] leave a mark.

Prem Chopra is alright. Atul Kulkarni looks like a buffoon. And what is Raghvir Yadav doing in this film? Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi, K.K. Raina, Akhilendra Mishra and Dayashanker Pandey are passable. Amitabh Bachchan’s presence in the penultimate minutes fails to evoke any reaction.

On the whole, DELHI 6 has a terribly boring beginning [first hour], an absorbing middle [second half] and a weak end [climax]. At the box-office, the business is bound to be divided. The film may record bountiful collections at multiplexes in its opening weekend. The popular music as also the fact that there’s no major opposition will benefit the film in the initial days. But the business at single screens as also the mass belt will be a shocking contrast. However, the cracks will start appearing sooner than expected, even at plexes. Thumbs down!

Amitabh with Cameron Diaz

Posted in Amitabh Bachchan, News on February 5, 2009 by nrmodh

… and Kat with Monica Belluci, Eva Mendes or Cameron Diaz? That’s what Feroze Nadiadwala is planning with Hollywood’s Rob Cohen

Firoz Nadiadwala is the next Bollywood filmmaker to show a fascination for Hollywood. He’s got Rob Cohen, who made hit Hollywood films like Fast and The Furious, The Skulls, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and The Mummy 3, to direct his Rs 300 crore magnum opus Jewel of India. You may hold your breath… for the Feroze-Cohen combine is looking at signing either Al Pacino or Robert de Niro for this film, with glamour being lent by Monica Belluci, Eva Mendes or Cameron Diaz, and — yes, getting Amitabh Bachchan and Katrina Kaif to join this eclectic gang of superstars.

Feroze, who has made slick hit comedies like Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri and Welcome, believes Jewel of India will generate huge business opportunities for Indian cinema. “It’s going to open up the market in a big way,” he said, “We have good content and talent in India and bringing in Western technology and expertise can boost our economy.” Cohen, who will be in Mumbai soon to discuss the film with Feroze and meet Bachchan, added, “In India, there are vast resources of untapped talent and many vibrant artistes not known to the West. My intention is to bridge the Hollywood-Bollywood gap in a mainstream fashion. I can’t wait to begin the film. Or for the day when Amitabh Bachchan and Al Pacino or Robert de Niro come together in one frame. It will mean the coming together of the fast and the furious.”

Jewel of India is the story of a student who discovers a document that leads him to believe that the Kohinoor diamond in the Tower of London is not real and that the real diamond is somewhere in India or close by. “It will be a modern-day action film with Indian history woven into it to create an exciting treasure adventure,” revealed Feroze.

Industry reacts on Rahman being the first Indian to win a Golden Globe Award

Posted in Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar, himesh reshamiya on January 15, 2009 by nrmodh

Mira Nair: “The most innocent and lovely image on American television in years was the sight of our beloved A.R. Rahman on tiptoe hugging a loved one before he got the Golden Globe. How wonderful to see this rush of talent being recognized. Go, Slumdog!”

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: “This is absolutely fantastic news. Superb in the superlative. Heartiest congratulations to him. He’s truly blessed. An incredible talent, a wonderful soul and has always been and will be the pride of our country.”

Pritam Chakraborty: “Wow …I was kind of expecting this. Congratulations to him. It’s a proud moment for any Indian especially the music fraternity. I pray that it’s just the beginning for him.”

Amitabh Bachchan: “Congratulations. A reward most deserving.”

Abhishek Bachchan: “What a glorious moment for him. He continues to make us proud. I’m very lucky to have worked with him in Yuva, Guru and Delhi 6. My congratulations to him.”

Gulzar: “It’s the horse that has won the race. The one riding the horse was Rahman. My lyrics for ‘Jai Ho‘ were just the lagaam for the horse. Rahman has always been a clutter-breaker. He broke the antara-mukhda-antara (stanza-intro-stanza) mould in Hindi film songs. Now he has broken into the international arena. I’m working with him on the new Mani Ratnam project Raavan. As always it’s a pleasure. All I can say for Rahman is, Jai Ho.”

Bappi Lahiri: “It’s a great honour for Bollywood. We’re all proud of A R Rahman. God bless him.”

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: “I guess on the way to the Oscars he has picked up a Golden Globe. The best thing about his music in Slumdog Millionaire (SD) is that his work in the film is so revolutionary and potent, that he made the jury’s job easier. God bless Rahman for bringing India back on the cultural world-map. This will pave the way for bigger things from him and from our country.”

Javed Akhtar: “I’m thrilled happy and proud, but not at all surprised. It’s inevitable for a genius like Rahman to get international acclaim.”

Shekhar Ravjiani: “A. R. Rahman is a genius. The music of SM is outstanding. It deserves every award on this planet. I’m extremely happy for him.”

Udit Narayan: “I’ve had the singular pleasure of working with A. R. Rahman many times. In fact I had sung for the last India-based film Lagaan that had his music. He’s a fine human being and composer. I always say good things happen to good people. This honour that he has brought to the country proves it. Today when I have cut down on my singing I realize he’s one of the composers I’d want to sing for even if I stopped singing.”

Ashutosh Gowarikar: “In one word he is fan-tas-tic! He’s a trailblazer. I’m so very proud of him, too thrilled! And his speech at the Golden Globe ceremonies was superb, short and sweet full of gratitude for his fans. Wow! I’ll exhale only when I meet him.”

Sunidhi Chauhan: “When I heard Rahman saab had won a Golden Globe it didn’t register for a while. It took me time to understand what he has done. I’m too, too happy to say anything. I haven’t sung too many songs from him. Recently, I sang a Hindi song for him in an English-language film. Singing an A.R Rahman composition is a privilege. I’m glad the West is realizing his worth.”

Shreya Ghoshal: “I’m extremely happy and thrilled to hear this. It’s a huge achievement. I’m very proud of Rahman sir. This is just the beginning for him.”

Anu Malik: “I’m not surprised. Such talent comes once in a lifetime. I’m in London and I caught the film and its music. It’s terrific. A great day for our great country. A R Rahman is a genius. I’m sure he’s going to get an Oscar now. I salute A R Rahman. Mark my words. Next month Rahman will also get the Oscar for SM. It is brilliant. I’m so happy for him. With the Oscar coming to Rahman the Indian music industry would’ve come a long way.”

Farhan Akhtar: “I’m very happy for him. The recognition is truly deserved. Congratulations to Rahman and Danny Boyle.”

Vishal Bhardwaj: “Things just won’t stop here for Rahman. The genius shall now bring an Oscar for us. Insha Allah.”

Aditya Narayan: “It’s incredible! He’s the first Indian artiste to be working internationally at such a high level. I’ve had the pleasure of singing for him when I was a child in Taal. Of course now everyone will say he had it in him. Here’s one artiste who just does his work, and wastes no time in publicity gimmicks. I think India is just getting ready for international recognition.”

Bipasha Basu: “He’s an absolute genius. He deserves every award. And the applause he’s getting globally is richly deserved. I feel immense pride.”

Anand Raj Anand: “He deserves it. He’s the only music director who got opportunities to work in terrific banners and super-talented directors. I wish him many many more achievements.”

Sameer Anjaan: “It’s a proud moment for every Indian. I’m lucky to have worked with him. He deserves much more.”

Aadesh Shrivastava: Bahut garv hota hai apne desh ke prati. Jai Hind.”

Himesh Reshammiya: “He deserves it. He’s my favourite.”

Ameesha: “Rahman is a modern-day Mozart. A complete genius. I wish him the Oscar next.”

Kunal Ganjawala: “This is just the beginning of many more international awards to come for Rahman.”

KK (singer): “He deserves it. Glad he brought it for us. He’s someone who understands music and what it does for our soul. Truly Indian too. God bless him .This is just the beginning.”

Irrfan Khan: Rahman ki jai ho aur aage Indian cinema ki bhi jai ho. I’m part of SM and meri bhi jai ho.”

As they say ‘You can love it or hate it, but simply cannot ignore it.’ That’s exactly the case with the Akshay Kumar-Deepika Padukone starrer Chandni Chowk To China, whose promos are all over not just the place, but also the space, including cyber space! That’s not all. The film’s lead stars are walking every possible extra mile to ensure that the film is a superhit!

Well, the news is that Akshay Kumar has invited none other than Mr. Amitabh Bachchan to attend the film’s premiere in London. Big B is already in London for work related to Balki’s next venture Pa, and has accepted Akshay’s invitation. Interestingly, Akki also requested Big B to leave the ‘thinking caps’ behind while watching the film as CC2C is a full-on masala film. And when the request comes from one ‘Reigning Superstar’ to another, how can one refuse!

With Big B’s presence at the London premiere tonight, the event will definitely be one of the biggest Bollywood affairs to happen in the city.
