Aishwarya and I share great comfort level: Akshay Kumar

Posted in Aishwarya Rai, News, akshay kumar on June 2, 2009 by nrmodh

While most work in the film industry has come to a standstill because of the current standoff between producers and multiplex owners, Akshay Kumar is working harder than ever before. He has shot for two films: Priyadarshan’s De Dana Dan and Vipul Shah’s Action Replay back-to-back in April and May, and now, he proceeds to shoot for buddy Sajid Khan’s Housefull in July.

While many of his colleagues have taken off for holidays, Akshay has decided to work harder than before during this dry period.

“We all should get together to create a bank of work to be released in a tumble of films, once the releases begin. In fact, that’s what I’m doing.”

Akshay follows a Japanese philosophy on work ethics.

“When there was a strike in a shoe factory in Japan, all the workers, instead of staying home, got together and manufactured only shoes for the left foot. Then when the strike was over, they manufactured shoes for the right foot.” Even as Akshay gets busier than ever, he has decided not to do any off-beat films at the moment. The Tasveer 8 x 10 experience and its shockingly low opening have left him stunned.

“There’re too much financial stakes in my films. I have to be cautious,” he says. It’s third-time lucky for Akki.

Vipul Shah was keen to cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Akshay together in Waqt and Namastey London.

“But, because of Aishwarya’s problems with the dates, the films went to Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif, respectively. And look at what the films did to the careers of those actresses! This time, Vipul and Akshay were determined to get their first choice for the heroine’s role,” says a source.

And it surely seems like the right choice. There’s magic in the air. Akshay and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are shooting in Karjat together. And the camaraderie reportedly is super-congenial. Akshay has been keen to work with Aishwarya for a long time. He earlier did Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Khakee with. But, there she played the antagonist.

“It’s great fun. And we share a great comfort level. I’m also very fond of Abhishek. So, it feels like one family,” says Akshay.

Akshay-Twinkle arrested for unbuttoning act at Lakme Fashion Week

Posted in News, akshay kumar on May 21, 2009 by nrmodh

akshay-kumar2

After combating and defending his ‘obscene unbuttoning act’ at the Lakme Fashion Week, bashed by the moral brigade of the country, fulfilled his moral obligation by appearing at the Vakola Police Station for his awaiting arrest.

The actor who frowned many with his abashed unbuttoning act at the Lakme Fashion Week with wife Twinkle in tow, is busy paying the price for the naughty act done in zest and haste.

Trying to brush aside the obscenity complaint filed with the Vakola police by a citizen, the daredevil actor said, “It was nothing. Last year, too, a girl opened one button on my jeans as part of an endorsement because the campaign signified freedom. This time it was my wife. It was not a last-minute improvisation on the ramp. It was all part of the act. In a country hit by poverty and economic recession, someone makes an issue about my wife unbuttoning my jeans! They should appreciate the fact that I asked Twinkle rather than a stranger.”

And it’s not just Akshay who is in the line of fire; his better half Twinkle gives him company here too.

The publicity stunt seems to have stirred such a controversy that a joint complaint against the couple was filed.

Twinkle had been arrested earlier and released on bail but Akshay’s arrest was awaited as he was busy in shooting. The actor was soon released on bail.

The trick behind Akshay’s double role in 8×10 Tasveer

The trick behind Akshay's double role in 8x10 Tasveer

Filmi double roles have always fascinated us. To make them possible, techniques like shooting in several layers, shooting with the help of chroma are common practice. But if we talk about Akshay Kumar’s 8×10 Tasveer, there is certainly something unique.

Akshay’s double role: The best sequence and the most challenging one too! No chroma shots, but frame by frame rotoscoping (technique of cutting out the images) done by Vfx house Prime Focus. All of Akshay’s shots were shot twice in two different layers using a dummy character in front of him. Later, the dummy character was rotoed out from each frame and was replaced by Akshay shot in a separate layer.

“It was a long sequence and was shot on the boat where everything was shaking. As the part of the post production, we had to roto out Akshay in each and every frame; besides, all the shots needed to be stabilized because of the shake. The scene where both the Akshays are fighting was the most challenging one,” says Merzin Tavaria, Creative Head, Prime Focus.

‘Akshay & Kareena are the best dressed in Bollywood’

Posted in Kareena Kapoor, News, akshay kumar on April 17, 2009 by nrmodh

Dressing up Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone and Brandon Routh was the most fabulous experience of her career and she is floored by their humility, says Indian celebrity designer Shabina Khan.

“It was fabulous designing for Sylvester Stallone and Brandon Routh (of ‘Superman’ fame). It was my finest experience. They are professionals and did whatever I asked them to do. Apart from designing for them, what I learnt from them was how to be humble. Both of them are extremely down to earth,” Khan told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Stallone and Routh are making special appearances in producer Sajid Nadiadwala’s “Kambhakkt Ishq”, a film about an Indian stuntman who takes Hollywood by storm but cannot find true love.

“As both of them were playing themselves in the film, what I had kept in my mind while designing for them was how people dress up in Hollywood. Since most were action sequences, I gave them more of cargos, hoodies (T-shirts with hoods) and tight T-shirts,” she said.

Directed by debutant Sabbir Khan, the film has Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles. Akshay plays Routh’s body double in the actioner.

Shabina Khan also designed Akshay’s clothes and said the filmmaker didn’t want anything “conventional” for him.

“The director wanted a macho look for Akshay but not the ‘ganjis’ and tight T-shirts. So I created a new trendy look for him. I gave him tight cargos, waistcoats, boots and scarves,” she explained.

Starting in 1988, Khan has worked as a designer for more than 30 films, including “Hum Aapke Hain Koun?”, “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”.

“I started designing for Salman Khan initially. Both of us were in the same college. I designed for him for 13 years,” said Khan who has also dressed stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Madhuri Dixit.

She considers Akshay and Kareena the best dressed Bollywood celebrities.

“Anything and everything looks good on Akshay. He has a perfect body and a perfect face. He can carry anything off. Kareena is very versatile. Whether it’s Indian or Western she can carry both with elan and look stunning,” she said.

Khan’s forthcoming projects are Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Chenab Gandhi”, Vipul Shah’s “Action Replay”, Sajid Nadiadwala’s “Housefull” and Priyadarshan’s “De Dhana Dhan” among which two are period films.

“‘Chenab Gandhi’ is a period film. Since ‘Action Replay’ starring Akshay and Aishwarya (Rai) is set in the 1970s, I consider that a period film as well,” she said.

“It is extremely difficult to design for a period film. You have to be accurate with your homework because if you miss anything, you’ll completely mess up. Therefore, at the pre-production level, a lot has to be done,” she said.

Akshay: I’m not saying sorry

Posted in Events, News, akshay kumar on April 17, 2009 by nrmodh

The actor is likely to get arrested after his return from South Africa, however Akshay maintains, “I think the focus should be more on the Lok Sabha elections than my denim button!”

Akshay Kumar is adamant about not apologising for his unbuttoning act at a fashion event recently. Akshay who is in South Africa shooting for the second season of Khatron Ke Khiladi has said he won’t issue out an apology on the issue. Unlike his contemporary Shah Rukh Khan who recently apologized over his statement on Sunil Gavaskar, Akshay says there’s nothing to apologise and states vested interest are trying to sabotage his career.

Ridiculing the obscenity complaint filed against him and wife Twinkle, Akshay told StarBoxOffice.com from South Africa, “This is ridiculous. There are so many serious critical problems haunting the country now but there’s so much interest in the button on my trouser. I think the focus should be more on the Lok Sabha elections than my denim button!”

Akshay’s wife Twinkle was arrested and released on bail bond of Rs. 950 at the Vakola police station, Mumbai city. However, Kumar states he won’t surrender to the cops. “Last year also there was a girl who had unbuttoned one single button in my denim. It was part of the endorsement of the brand and the ‘unbutton’ campaign. It really has nothing to do with me. Last year the girl did it this time it was my wife. What’s the big deal ?”

Reacting to criticism that Twinkle was last minute addition in the act, Akshay adds, “I am not the script writer for the act. I can guarantee there was no improvisation of any sort. The whole thing was planned in advance. It was part of the act. As per the script a girl would run to me and undo the top button of my denim, but I stop her and go to Twinkle and ask her to do the same. I don’t really want to keep harping about it, since it’s done with.”

Actors breaking the stereotypes!

Posted in Aamir Khan, News, Priyanka Chopra, Shahrukh khan, akshay kumar on April 15, 2009 by nrmodh

The Hindi film industry has had a tendency to typecast its actors. If any actor tended to do a certain genre of films, he or she got branded and also received similar offers from across the board in the filmdom…Once a vamp, always a vamp, once a sister, always a sister… once a father always a father…. once a cop… always a cop… but now cinema is no more in the Stone Age. Actors are now being accepted in different roles…

SRK

When the stammering Shah Rukh came to Mumbai after receiving a call from Hema Malini’s office, little did he know that his dream of turning actor would soon turn him into the king of Hindi films. Though he started his career as a romantic hero, his ambition to make it big compelled him to explore grey shades as well. The actor took on an anti-hero role in Baazigar and was given more ones with Darr and Anjaam as well. A string of action roles followed with the bloody Chahat too. But then it took the Yash Raj camp who gave him movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, to get SRK branded as the eternal lover boy – usually named Rahul or Raj. Yet SRK’s acting skills got much appreciated in the subtle and serious roles in recent movies like Swades and Chak De! India.

Akshay Kumar

The industry has always been quick to label actors. But only some actors have succeeded in breaking free from their given image. Since the time that martial arts ace Akshay Kumar stepped into the film industry, he was tagged as the action hero. He gave a string of flops and then went on to be a star with Khialdi. A series of action flicks and he was the Last Action Hero in moviedom.

After saturating with many action packed movies, Akshay tried his luck as a romantic hero and some good boy roles packed with emotions. And the success that eluded him and critics who called him a piece of furniture disappeared like the bad boys he beat up. Then came Hera Pheri and voila! Hindi cinema found a new surprise comic hero in the same tough Akshay. From then onwards, the story of Akshay’s comedy hits is continuing. Awara Paagal Deewana, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Garam Masala, Phir Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, Hey Babyy, Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiya to name ‘just a few’. Today, when his career is at an all time high, Akshay is back at what he is best in – as an action hero with Tashan and 8×10 Tasveer.

Bebo’s brand image

Bollywood’s celebrated size-zero actress Kareena Kapoor got a lucky head start in her career with Refugee. For a long time, Bebo was saddled with the next-door-girl image. That is, until she transformed into a glam doll, in films like Fida and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Just when she thought she would have been stereotyped again, came films like Chameli and Omkara. And Kareena proved that she is also a versatile Kapoor. And after a simple film like Jab We Met where she stopped doing all these by now infamous facial distortions, she has now shown that she can carry off any image with ease. Just in time comes Yash Raj movie Tashan where she will be seen in an out and out action role… a tad similar to her role in Asoka.

Priyanka Chopra

After Miss World title, Bebo’s on-again, off-again friend Priyanka Chopra’s ticket was Hindi film industry. Priyanka became the icon of style, glamour and oomph. Hardly anyone would have thought that Piggy Chops can do anything else except glamorous roles. But answering all these accusations, Priyanka is changing her image slowly and steadily. After the action oriented role in Don, she was seen in a sci-fi film and also as a bodyguard (Drona and Love Story 2050 respectively). And now with her Fashion doing superb, suddenly, Priyanka is all over the place and bagging all the Best Actress awards this year.

Aamir Khan

The original ‘chocolate boy’, Aamir Khan’s first film was an instant hit. And he was all over the place with his poster boy image. After years of standard lover boy image, not only did his fans but Aamir himself must have got bored. He

then became a face of patriotism with films like Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti and then did a volte face as a terrorist with Fanaa breaking the same image that he had set. The actor tried to get into a social mould with Taare Zameen Par but Ghajini was a shocker for his fans. A rugged, rough, and tough body is something, which was never associated with this petite handsome man, but Aamir proved that change is the only constant thing in this world. Whatever is the reason for change in image of these stars be, their fans seem to love them in their new avatars and it is definitely a treat to see them move on.

Kambakkht Ishq gets delayed

Posted in Kareena Kapoor, News, akshay kumar on April 15, 2009 by nrmodh

Well, well, what is this that we hear!?! It seems like the mighty Akshay Kumar has taken a beating yet again. A little birdie from Bollywood tells me that the release of Akki’s latest film Kambakkht Ishq is being postponed to August!

Evidently the dreaded R word is taking its toll on Bollywood and looks like Akshay has been the worst hit so far. That is not all. A movie buff friend also tells me that the film is a remake of a Tamil movie Pammal K Sambandam starring Kamal Haasan and Simran. Pammal told the story of a movie stuntman and an upcoming doctor.

It seems Anees Bazmee was to remake the movie and offered to buy the rights from the producer of the original at Rs 5 lakh. When Sajid Nadiadwala heard of this, he made an offer that couldn’t be refused… of Rs 75 lakh!

The budget of the Akshay starrer is said to be aound Rs 60 crore. And with the film’s release being delayed further, it makes us wonder at the number of people who are beginning to feel the heat.

Twinkle shy to come out of the house

Posted in News, akshay kumar on April 13, 2009 by nrmodh

Waiting for Akshay to return before they can head to police station

After the controversial unbuttoning of hubby Akshay Kumar’s jeans in public, Twinkle Khanna is too shy to come out of her house. So much so that she even dreads to venture into her balcony!

Mumbai police had registered a case against them and the organisers of the Lakme Indian Fashion Week after Twinkle unbuttoned her husband’s jeans during a Levi’s fashion show at the just concluded LIFW in Mumbai.

This stunt was aimed at highlighting the Levi’s Unbuttoned campaign but social campaigner Anil Nair found it “vulgar and indecent” and lodged a complaint against Akshay and Twinkle.

Subsequently, they were summoned to the police station. But Twinkle has still not gone there.

It seems Akshay is in Cape Town shooting for a commercial and Twinkle does not want to go to the police station alone. She is waiting for hubby to come back so they can go together.

Meanwhile she is keeping herself under house arrest so that no one spots her, including the cops!

Movie Review : 8×10 Tasveer

Posted in Ayesha Takiya, Movie Review, akshay kumar on April 5, 2009 by nrmodh

8 x 10 TASVEER disappoints. The film goes wrong, in fact horribly wrong, in the penultimate 20-25 minutes, which is the lifeline of any suspense-thriller. Nagesh Kukunoor has missed the bus this time!

Nagesh Kukunoor enters a new zone with 8 x 10 TASVEER: Suspense-thriller. His choice of the genre and subject material is also right. Yet, 8 x 10 TASVEER goes wrong, horribly wrong.

Now what was that? This is one question that haunts you at the end of the show. And, seriously, you want to direct this question to Kukunoor, who is also credited as the writer of this film.

Okay, let’s dissect… The concept is interesting. The atmosphere is perfect. The mystery deepens with each passing minute. Just when you thought that Kukunoor had pulled it off, a twist in the tale pulls the carpet off your feet. The film crumbles and the impression generated by some brilliantly executed sequences evaporate into thin air.

For any whodunit to succeed, it ought to hold your interest till the very last frame. Most importantly, the answers raised in the screenplay have to be convincing and justified. But 8 x 10 TASVEER gets unbearable towards the penultimate 20-25 minutes. When the mask is taken off the killer’s face, you are surprised. But the reasons that compelled him to act that way are childish. What happened, Mr. Kukunoor?

To cut a long story short, this tasveer is out of focus!

8 x 10 TASVEER is about Jai [Akshay Kumar], who possesses supernatural powers. Jai is of Indian origin who works as a forest ranger in Canada. His life is shattered by a loss of an important person in his life – his father [Benjamin Gilani]. This personal tragedy leads him to use his unique supernatural powers to unravel the mystery.

var zflag_nid=”585″; var zflag_cid=”829″; var zflag_sid=”36″; var zflag_width=”300″; var zflag_height=”250″; var zflag_sz=”9″;

Now let’s get to the root of the problem: The discrepancies in the script. Of course, 8 x 10 TASVEER is a whodunit and it would be sacrilege to reveal the end or the identity of the killer, but the reasons that compel the murderer to commit crime after crime are unbelievable and far from convincing.

The moment the truth is out in the open, from that point onwards, the writer doesn’t have convincing answers to offer. There are so many gaps that remain wide open till the end.

Nagesh Kukunoor goes two steps ahead as a technician, but five steps behind as a storyteller. The film has been shot stylishly and the breath-taking locales of Canada and South Africa only give the film a picture perfect look. But the screenplay is faulty. So faulty that you exit the auditorium with questions and more questions in your mind. The outcome fails to convince.

Vikas Sivaraman’s cinematography is top notch. The locales are splendid and the DoP has captured them with élan. There’s no scope for music in the film and the three songs [opening titles, romantic song and end credits] are passable. The background score [Salim-Sulaiman] is electrifying.

Akshay pitches in a sincere performance. 8 x 10 TASVEER is a complete departure from the kind of films the actor is popular for and it only goes to prove that he’s ready to experiment. Ayesha is natural. Sharmila Tagore is graceful. Jaaved Jaaferi is first-rate. Girish Karnad, Benjamin Gilani, Ananth Mahadevan and Rushaad Rana are perfect in their respective roles.

On the whole, 8 x 10 TASVEER disappoints. The film goes wrong, in fact horribly wrong, in the penultimate 20-25 minutes, which is the lifeline of any suspense-thriller. Nagesh Kukunoor has missed the bus this time!

Women are superior: Akshay

Posted in Interviews, akshay kumar on April 5, 2009 by nrmodh

Is it sheer coincidence, pure conspiracy or a publicity stunt that whenever Akshay Kumar has a film ready for release, the action star gets embroiled in some controversy that takes on national proportions and gets played out on all channels with full drama?

It happened before Chandni Chowk To China and, earlier, Singh Is Kinng. Now just after the Khiladi’s new big film hit the screens yesterday, Akshay is in the thick of two burning issues relating to a promo for Sajid Nadiadwala’s July release Kambhakth Ishq and his being a somewhat daring showstopper at the Lakme Fashion Week for designer Tarun Tahiliani on Monday.

According to his detractors, the Kambhakth Ishq promo has Akshay holding the sexy Kareena Kapoor suggestively with his lines reading, “Women are good for only one thing…” The film promo, released on March 27, has tongues wagging in disapproval already. And at fashion week, well, his walking the ramp in jeans that were unbuttoned partially by wife Twinkle sitting among the frontbenchers, has led to a social worker filing a complaint with the police against the actor, his wife, the LFW organisers and also the hotel where the event was held for indecent, vulgar and obscene behaviour..

The police is uncertain whether it has a case. And legal experts vary between being vague about the law and dismissive of the complaint. But Akshay is furious. These aren’t publicity stunts, he declared.

Earlier when dragged through similar fires, the actor scoffed at the attempts to defame him as being the work of a leading contemporary in Bollywood who was insecure about his meteoric rise in the film industry. But this time, while not taking names and hinting that he knew who was behind the exercise, Akshay is determined to prove a point.

Apologising if the jeans-being-unbuttoned stunt hurt anybody’s sentiments, he said that the entire act was part of the storyboard and was no big deal — thereby shooting down the rumour that it was done at the last minute because SRK was going to be Manish Malhotra’s showstopper later that night. And of the Kambhakth Ishq promo, again he chose to take the actor’s way out by saying, “Why do people forget that actors play roles, enact parts and deliver lines to get reactions… they are never personal?”

The promo, incidentally, gives only half the line. “Wait for the complete line,” advised Akshay, “then women will be glad to know how the jerk I portray eventually sees the value and importance of the superior gender — the woman!”
