Katrina’s sister to play Salman’s lady

Posted in Salman khan, katrina kaif, veer on April 19, 2008 by nrmodh

Salman Khan in Salaam-E-IshqBollywood hunk Salman Khan is sweating heavily to promote his 17-year-old sister-in-law, Isabel. Reportedly, Isabel will play Salman’s leading lady in Veer. Salman is knocking every director’s door to cast Isabel in their film as she is very much interested to act in films. Looking at her sister Katrina’s glory, Isabel too wanted to try her hands in Bollywood and become famous like Kat. Sallu at last succeeded to convince Gadar director Anil Sharma and he agreed to cast Isabel in Veer opposite him.

Veer is Salman’s first costliest film and budget is estimated to be over Rs. 75 crore. It is going to be an action movie and Salman has been working on the script for a year. Apparently, Anil is sensing some risk factor in casting a newcomer in his big budget project and has eye on Priyanka Chopra who is a family friend. The shooting of the film will commence in August and is expected to hit the silver screen by 2009.

Now, Saif doesn’t want to show tattoo

He asked Tashan choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant to alter his dance steps accordingly

Saif Ali Khan reportedly made Tashan’s dance director Vaibhavi Merchant alter his steps for Dil Haara so he could cover the tattoo (Kareena’s name) on his forearm as he didn’t want to apply make-up on it to conceal it.
For the Dil Haara song, the costumes and the look were already sketched out, long before Saif went in for the inking. It was too late to make new clothes.

Says an insider, “Saif, with the help of his director Vijay Krishna Acharya and dance director, Vaibhavi designed a new step to avoid showing his tattoo on camera.

In the promos for the song currently on air, it is quite evident that he is trying his best to not show it,” concludes the source.

Amitabh: I wanted TZP in IIFA

Posted in Amitabh Bachchan, IIFA 2008 on April 19, 2008 by nrmodh
Bachchan expresses his unhappiness on the Aamir Khan film not being under contention for the awards

The movie industry has been unanimous in its approval for Taare Zameen Par. It has even won countless awards but the film’s producer-director Aamir Khan has consistently shunned all of these ceremonies because they go against his principles. Now, however, because of Aamir’s refusal to apply for the IIFA, TZP will not even be a contender. Brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan tells us more…

Taare Zameen Par hasn’t been nominated for the IIFAs, what’s your reaction?
IIFA rules and procedures, approved by the governing body, states that it is mandatory for a producer seeking nomination for an Award category, to make a formal application. If the formal application is not made, irrespective of the status and merit of the film, it does not become eligible for a nomination. Aamir as a producer, did not put in that formal application making it very difficult for IIFA to consider TZP in any category.
As a brand ambassador did you think of inviting him personally?
IIFA and I also as its Brand Ambassador spoke to Aamir personally on this issue, because we did not want his film to go unrecognised and possibly unrewarded. But he told us that it was against his principles with regard to award ceremonies. He wished to be excused and I think we should honour that. Much as though we would have wanted to accommodate his film, it would have gone against the principles of the IIFA regulations. It would have set a wrong precedent unfortunately, for producers, who were following the regulations of IIFA. I have expressed to Aamir how immensely we shall miss his presence.

Your take on Aamir’s stand to boycott award ceremonies?
This is Aamir’s personal take on the matter and I shall respect it.

Have you watched the film?
I have not. But have heard glorious talk about it. Aamir has invited us to come and see it. Unfortunately, all of us have been travelling extensively and in different directions. As soon as we are all in town together, we shall watch it. I am in touch with Aamir on this.

Your reaction at TZP not being a part of IIFA?
Yes, I am deeply disappointed.

IIFA is in it ninth year. As the ambassador, how have you seen the show develop over the years
What started off as another one-day award show has now developed into an important three-day event. Its growth as a brand and a movement has brought immense visibility not just to the Indian entertainment industry, beyond Indian shores, but also proved to be an asset to the host nation.

Business forums in league with FICCI have added an enormous economic dimension to this event. I feel very proud of this fact and I wish it greater success in the future years as well.

Movie Review : Hope and a Little Sugar

Posted in Hope and a Little Sugar, Movie Review on April 18, 2008 by nrmodh

Good things come in small packages. HOPE & A LITTLE SUGAR [English] is a fine example of this adage. On face-value, you would be least interested in jumping the queue and grabbing its ticket. But once the reels unfold, you realize that sometimes small-budget films have more to convey than those multi-crore extravaganzas.

HOPE & A LITTLE SUGAR doesn’t look at the tragedy [9/11]. Nor does it look for reasons that resulted in the tragedy. It looks at the trauma a family undergoes through and one has to move on in life. One of the prime reasons why it works is because the film has recall value. It affects you even after the show has concluded.

Write your own movie review of Hope and a Little Sugar

A film for mature audiences, HOPE & A LITTLE SUGAR packs a solid punch in those 90 minutes.

Set in New York in the weeks before and after 9/11, HOPE & A LITTLE SUGAR centers around the romance between a Muslim photographer and a young Sikh woman. Bike messenger Ali [Amit Sial] meets the beautiful but married Saloni [Mahima Chaudhry], a charismatic mithaai shop owner who encourages Ali’s photography and becomes his muse. Despite Ali’s secret and largely unrequited crush on Saloni, he develops a close friendship with her and her husband Harry [Vikram Chatwal].
When tragedy strikes with the terrorist attacks on September 11, her father-in-law, a retired army Colonel [Anupam Kher], devastated by grief and anger, directs his longstanding animosity towards Muslims at Ali, as the young man’s affection for Saloni grows increasingly evident. Although the Colonel’s wife [Suhasini Mulay] tries to pacify her husband, the Colonel, unable to accept life’s pain, threatens to bring everything to a violent end.

Director Tanuja Chandra narrates an interesting tale and more importantly, it’s topical even today, years after 9/11 occurred. Her storytelling technique is simple, yet powerful. A number of sequences, especially post 9/11, have been handled with dexterity. But the culmination could’ve been more impactful. Why does Kher have a change of heart all of a sudden? A solid reason is lacking. Also, the romance [from Mahima's side] should’ve been better established. A sequence or two should’ve been devoted to make things appear believable.

HOPE & A LITTLE SUGAR belongs to Tanuja Chandra; this is her most accomplished work so far. Also, every actor is in top form: Mahima [excellent], Kher [incredible], Suhasini Mulay [exceptional] and new-find Amit Sial [fine talent; confident]. Vikram Chatwal gets minimal scope.

On the whole, HOPE & A LITTLE SUGAR is a well-made, engrossing fare that caters to a niche audience. A film for select multiplexes in India.

Lara Dutta says yes to SRK’s ‘Billoo Barber’

Posted in Billoo Barber, Lara Dutta, Shahrukh khan on April 14, 2008 by nrmodh

After two actresses walked out of Billoo Barber , Lara Dutta has reportedly given her nod to the project.

Shah Rukh Khan’s home production ‘Billoo Barber’ has seen quite a shuffle in its cast. The film, to be directed by Priyadarshan , stars Irrfan Khan in the title role of a village barber and Shah Rukh Khan as a big movie star..

Tabu and Amisha Patel were previously approached to play the role of barber’s wife but both the actresses turned down the offer because they found their roles too small.

Now, the casting woes of Priyadarshan have ended because Lara Dutta has signed the film. And reports say that she plays the barber’s wife in the film.

Lara, who recently bowed out of the Bachchans’ world tour ‘The Unforgettables’, apparently had few dates to spare in the coming months and therefore agreed to do the movie. Apart from this, Lara is also set to do a full-on action movie titled Blue .

WHAT’S ‘BILLOO BARBER’ ABOUT?

‘Billoo Barber’ is inspired from Malayalam film ‘Katha Parayumbol’. The movie tells the story of a village barber (Irrfan Khan) who is in a financial crunch because he refuses to change with times. But then a movie crew comes to the village to shoot a film that has a very famous superstar (SRK) who once used to be Billoo’s childhood friend. Overnight, the poor Billoo gains respect in the eyes of the villagers. But he himself is hesitant to meet the superstar because he fears that his friend of yesteryears won’t recognize him.

The movie will also have special appearances by top Bollywood actresses.

I’m not getting married: Katrina

Posted in Salman khan, katrina kaif on April 14, 2008 by nrmodh

It’s that time of the year again – the time when gossipmongers rear their heads to announce that Katrina Kaif is getting married to Salman Khan.

The most interesting fact is that rumour mills even decide dates and mahurats for the multiple (and, apparently, annual) Sallu-Kat weddings they’ve organised in the recent past. This time, the grapevine says that the wedding is going to happen ‘very soon’ and ‘only close friends and relatives will be a part of it’.

Well, Kat remains unperturbed. When we asked her about the rumours, she replied, “These rumours are completely false and ridiculous. I am not getting married. These are silly people playing games by spreading these rumours. I’d also like to add that I’m. booked every day of this year already for my films.”

So she’s precluded the possibility of getting married any time again this year. Then why is it that people don’t stop talking about Salman and her and why don’t the two of them take a stand on this? “It is because people know that both Salman and I do not comment on our private lives ever,” she answers.
